Abstract

Current media function as instruments of power that shape social thought through linguistic manipulation techniques. Therefore, it is necessary to train professionals capable of critically analyzing media messages in the English language. This article presents an interventive strategy aimed at developing discursive-media culture in Cuban university students, specifically in the English Language program at the University of Oriente.
Grounded in critical discourse theory, semiotics, and psychology, the proposed strategy is structured in three stages that foster the development of skills to deconstruct textual macrostructure, identify prefabricated semantic configurations, and issue critical judgments regarding media information.
The implementation of this strategy, applied since 2018 to a group of 16 students, demonstrated positive results. The study concludes that media literacy is indispensable in university education to counteract information manipulation and train
reflective, competent, and critical professionals.
